Rudraksha

Rudraksha

Rudraksha is an integral part of “lord Shiva”. Since it is believed to a part of the lord himself it is c

ommonly worn by his devotees. Rudraksha can only be in ones possession only if the lord himself wishes to give . It is very sacred and only after knowing its vale we should wear it.

STORY OF RUDRAKSHA: Tears from lord shiva’s eyes (rudran & atchagam ) gives the meaning and understanding from where it came . it is believed when the lord burnt thiripura he saw the suffering of the people and he shed tears which became rudraksha trees. Some say after long long years of penance when he open his eyes the tears became rudraksha trees. But this is god’s gift to humans.

SKANDA-SHASTHI

One must observe the Krishna Paksha or the waning fortnight Shashti Vratam. Shashti means the sixth day.

Monday, called Soma vaara, is significant because it is a day when the all-powerful Lord Shiva is one with his Shakti Uma. It is “Sa + Uma” vaara, hence Soma Vaara. Out of the six faces of Lord Muruga, five faces are Lord Shiva’s and one face is the face of Ambal. He thus signifies the union of Shiva and Shakti.
Thus, the day of Lord Muruga on Shashti, coinciding with a Soma Vaara is especially auspicious.

They say, “Sattiyil irundhaal thaan agappaiyil varum” – It actually means that if one observes the vratam on Shashti, the Grace of Lord Muruga will bless her with progeny. We also believe that a family gets every prosperity and Sowbhagya by worshipping Lord Muruga.

Recite this prayer of Saint Vallalar Ramalinga Adigal for mental peace and prosperity.

Samudra Manthan

This very popular Shivaratri le

gend from Puranas explains why people stay awake

all night on Shivaratri. Besides, it also tells us why Lord Shiva is also known as Neelakantha.

Legend Behind Samudra Manthan
Once Indra - the King of Gods, while riding on an elephant came across Durvasa Muni who offered him a special garland. Indra accepted the garland but put in on the trunk of the elephant. The elephant was irritated by the smell and it threw

the garland on the floor. This enraged the sage as the garland was a dwelling of Sri (fortune) and was to be treated as prasada. Durvasa Muni cursed Indra and all devas to be bereft of all strength, energy, and fortune.

In battles that followed this incident, devas were defeated and asuras (demons) led by Bali gained control of the universe. Devas sought help from Lord Vishnu who advised them to treat asuras in a diplomatic manner. Devas formed an alliance with asuras to jointly churn the ocean for the nectar of immortality and to share it among them. Lord Vishu told Devas that we would arrange that they alone obtain the nectar.
The Churning of the Ocean
The churning of the milk - ocean was an elaborate process. Mount Mandara was used as churning rod and Vasuki, the King of Serpents, became the churning rope. Lord Vishnu himself had to intercede in so many ways to aid the Devas. All kinds o

f herbs were cast into the ocean and many great being

s and objects were produced from the ocean and were divided between asuras and gods. It is said that following things emerged from the S

amudra Manthan:

  • Sura or Varuni - Goddess and creator of wine
  • Apsaras - various divine nymphs
  • Kaustubha - a rare diamond said to be the most valuable jewel in the world
  • Uchhaishravas - the divine white horse

  • Kalpavriksha - the wish-granting tree
  • Kamadhenu - the wish fulfilling cow
  • Airavata - the white elephant
  • Lakshmi - the Goddess of Fortune and Wealth. Vishnu and Her were reunited after having been separated for many ages.

Haalaa-Hala - the Poison
During the Sagar Manthan by the gods and dem

ons, haalaa-hala, a pot of poison also came out of the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the poison was so toxic that it effects would have wiped out the entire creation. On the advice of Lord Vishnu, Gods approached Lord Shiva for help and protection as only he could swallow it without being affected. On the request of gods and out of compassion for living beings, Lord Shiva drank the poison. However, Parvati - Lord Shiva’s consort pressed his neck so that the poison does not reach his stomach. Thus, it stayed in his throat neither going up nor going down and Shiva remained unharmed. The poison was so potent that it changed the color of Lord Mahadeva’s neck to blue. For this reason, Lord Shiva is also called Neelakantha (the blue-necked one) where ‘Neela’ means blue and ‘Kantha’ means neck or throat.

As part of the therapy, doctors advised gods to keep Lord Shiva awake during the night. Thus, Gods kept a vigil in contemplation of Lord Shiva. To amuse Shiva and to keep him awake, the gods took turn performing various dances and playing music. As the day broke out, Lord Shiva, pleased with their devotion blessed them all. Shivaratri is the celebration of this event by which Shiva saved the world. Since then, on this day and night - devotees fast, keep vigil, sing glories of Lord and meditate.

Churning Out Divine Nectar
At last, Dhanvantari - the Divine Physician appeared with a pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality) in his skilful hands. Fierce fighting ensued between devas and asuras for the nectar. To protect the nectar from asuras, devas hid the pot of nectar at four places on the earth - Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. At each of these places, a drop of the nectar spilled from the pot and since then, it is believed that these places acquired mystical power. Grand Kumbh Mela is celebrated at the four places after every 12 year for this reason.

Eventually, Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful woman, Mohini. While her beauty bewildered the asuras, Mohini seized the nectar and returned it to the Devas, who drank it immediately.

Sri Garbarakshimbikai temple

Location:Garbharakshambikai temple is situated in Thirukarugavur on the banks of the river Vettar, branch of the Sacred river Cauvery, in the Papanasam Taluk of Thanjavur District, at 20 kilometers east of Thanjavur Town and at 20 kilometers South west of Kumbakonam, state of Tamil Nadu, India.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE:
It would suffice to recount the story of Sage Nithuvar and his wife Vedhika as it relates to the circumstances in which Parvathi took the form of Sri Karbharakshambikai in order to give special protection to women during pregnancy.
THE STORY IS THAT,SAGE NITHUVAR WAS LIVING WITH HIS WIFE VIDHIKA .One day when Sage Nithuvar was away, sage Urdhvapada happened to visit the place. Vedhika who was then alone and in an advanced state of pregnancy unwittingly failed to offer, due hospitality to the guest. Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got incensed at her conduct and landed a cruel curse upon her , as a result of which poor Vedhika was visited with foul disease, which began to eat into the very vitals of not only herself but also the child in the womb. The helpless Vedhika fervently prayed for relief to Goddess Parvathi who in the plentitude of her mercy appeared before Vedhika in the form of Sri Karbharaksha

mbikai totally erased the effect of the curse and saved Vedhika, the child in her womb.

The story goes that the Goddess offered

protection to the embryo by keeping it in a divine pot till it bloomed in to full-fledged child. Vedhika over-whelmed with joy, fell at the feet of Sri Karbharakshambikai and prayed that the Ambika should

take a permanent abode at the place and continue to offer protection to future generations of women also. Thus we find this prayer being fulfilled even to this day at this holy place. DIVINESS OF THE TEMPLE: The Lord of this place, is called ‘Mullaivananathar’ and His Linga here is ‘Swamyabu’ i.e. ‘Self Manifested.’ This Linga is made up of anthill mud. Hence there is no water Abishekam for this Lord. Instead, the Linga is merely pasted with a kind of musk called ‘Punuhu.’ People who are afflicted with incurable diseases come to this place offer ‘Punuhu Chattam’ to the Lord and get themselves relieved of the diseases.

AUSPICIOUS TIMES : All days are auspicious in this temple; prodhoshams are very special in this temple, as in other Siva temples.

POOJAS TO BE PERFORMED FOR Couples who remain childless for a long time should offer ghee, which will be placed at the Feet of the Goddess charged with manthras and given to them. If the couples eat a little of this Ghee at night daily for 48 days the woman will certainly conceive soon and they will be blessed with children. Pregnant women expecting deliveries should offer castor oil, which will be placed, at the Feet of Sri Garbha Ratshambikai , charged with manthras and offered to them. This castor oil has wonderful property. When the women get the labour pains, this oil should be smeared on their abdomen. This will eliminate all complications , dangers and after effects of deliveries and make the deliveries quite easy.

POOJA OFFERINGS For pooja coconut, banana, betel & Nut are offered, castor oil is offered which is kept in the feet of the goddess for manthra . Charging of Castor Oil for Easy Deliveries. What is an Ashtakam? An Ashtakam is a song comprising eight sections. You are expected to sing each section to the same music.

Sri Annapurna Ashtakam is written by Adi Shankaracharya to praise and invoke the grace of Mother Goddess Annapurneswari. Mother Goddess Annapurneswari is the presiding deity at Banaras or Varanasi. She is the Mother who graces food to everybody ; especially for poor and destitute. The Godess of Varanasi also fed King Harishchandra's children (he became poor due to Rishi Vashishta). There are many Annapoorni temples in India where food is freely served every day to every one i.e. Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

Annapurna Ashtakam is loved for its wordings and composition. You will realise all your ambitions by chanting or singing this ashtakam.
