Sri Garbarakshimbikai temple

Location:Garbharakshambikai temple is situated in Thirukarugavur on the banks of the river Vettar, branch of the Sacred river Cauvery, in the Papanasam Taluk of Thanjavur District, at 20 kilometers east of Thanjavur Town and at 20 kilometers South west of Kumbakonam, state of Tamil Nadu, India.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE:
It would suffice to recount the story of Sage Nithuvar and his wife Vedhika as it relates to the circumstances in which Parvathi took the form of Sri Karbharakshambikai in order to give special protection to women during pregnancy.
THE STORY IS THAT,SAGE NITHUVAR WAS LIVING WITH HIS WIFE VIDHIKA .One day when Sage Nithuvar was away, sage Urdhvapada happened to visit the place. Vedhika who was then alone and in an advanced state of pregnancy unwittingly failed to offer, due hospitality to the guest. Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got incensed at her conduct and landed a cruel curse upon her , as a result of which poor Vedhika was visited with foul disease, which began to eat into the very vitals of not only herself but also the child in the womb. The helpless Vedhika fervently prayed for relief to Goddess Parvathi who in the plentitude of her mercy appeared before Vedhika in the form of Sri Karbharaksha

mbikai totally erased the effect of the curse and saved Vedhika, the child in her womb.

The story goes that the Goddess offered

protection to the embryo by keeping it in a divine pot till it bloomed in to full-fledged child. Vedhika over-whelmed with joy, fell at the feet of Sri Karbharakshambikai and prayed that the Ambika should

take a permanent abode at the place and continue to offer protection to future generations of women also. Thus we find this prayer being fulfilled even to this day at this holy place. DIVINESS OF THE TEMPLE: The Lord of this place, is called ‘Mullaivananathar’ and His Linga here is ‘Swamyabu’ i.e. ‘Self Manifested.’ This Linga is made up of anthill mud. Hence there is no water Abishekam for this Lord. Instead, the Linga is merely pasted with a kind of musk called ‘Punuhu.’ People who are afflicted with incurable diseases come to this place offer ‘Punuhu Chattam’ to the Lord and get themselves relieved of the diseases.

AUSPICIOUS TIMES : All days are auspicious in this temple; prodhoshams are very special in this temple, as in other Siva temples.

POOJAS TO BE PERFORMED FOR Couples who remain childless for a long time should offer ghee, which will be placed at the Feet of the Goddess charged with manthras and given to them. If the couples eat a little of this Ghee at night daily for 48 days the woman will certainly conceive soon and they will be blessed with children. Pregnant women expecting deliveries should offer castor oil, which will be placed, at the Feet of Sri Garbha Ratshambikai , charged with manthras and offered to them. This castor oil has wonderful property. When the women get the labour pains, this oil should be smeared on their abdomen. This will eliminate all complications , dangers and after effects of deliveries and make the deliveries quite easy.

POOJA OFFERINGS For pooja coconut, banana, betel & Nut are offered, castor oil is offered which is kept in the feet of the goddess for manthra . Charging of Castor Oil for Easy Deliveries. Ghee is offered which is kept in the feet of the goddess for manthra . Charged Ghee is believed to Bless the couple with Childr en.

What is an Ashtakam? An Ashtakam is a song comprising eight sections. You are expected to sing each section to the same music.

Sri Annapurna Ashtakam is written by Adi Shankaracharya to praise and invoke the grace of Mother Goddess Annapurneswari. Mother Goddess Annapurneswari is the presiding deity at Banaras or Varanasi. She is the Mother who graces food to everybody ; especially for poor and destitute. The Godess of Varanasi also fed King Harishchandra's children (he became poor due to Rishi Vashishta). There are many Annapoorni temples in India where food is freely served every day to every one i.e. Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

Annapurna Ashtakam is loved for its wordings and composition. You will realise all your ambitions by chanting or singing this ashtakam.

STORY OF Siva as Somaskanda

CHENNAI: The Divine spark that emanated from Lord Siva's third eye was transformed into six babies, who were brought up by the six women. Lord Siva asked Goddess Parvati to accompany Him to where the babies were being looked after. When Parvati saw the babies, She embraced them all together, and they were all fused into one child, that had six faces, twelve eyes and twelve arms. Nothing is possible without Her mercy, said M.A. Manickavelu in a discourse on the birth of Lord Subrahmanya.

The Goddess then gave the child Her milk. As She fed the child, some of the milk spilled into the nearby river, in which many fish were swimming. These fish were originally the sons of sage Parasara. They had hurt the fish in the river, and their father had cursed them to become fishes themselves. The sage had said they would be released from the curse, when Goddess Parvati fed the child Subrahmanya with milk. Accordingly, when the milk drops fell into the river, they recovered their original form.

Through Her milk what the Goddess gave to Lord Subrahmanya was gnana. There are two types of gnana — knowledge of worldly things; and knowledge of the Supreme One. It is spiritual knowledge that is the most important for us. Having fed the child, Parvati handed the child to Lord Siva. The Lord seated the child between Himself and Goddess Parvati. It is in this form that Lord Siva is known as Somaskanda.

This is a significant form of the Lord. Earlier when there were quarrels between the Divine couple, there was always the possibility that Parvati could leave Lord Siva in anger. But now, the presence of the child Subrahmanya would make Her think twice before leaving Her consort. The Goddess is dark in colour, and may be said to symbolise the night. Lord Siva is Fire, and so is associated with daytime, which is hot. Lord Subrahmanya was seated between the Lord and the Goddess, looking like twilight, which is between day and night. The Goddess is also like the Moon, while the Lord is like the Sun. So Subrahmanya seated between them could be compared to the time of the day when the Sun hasn't quite set, and the Moon hasn't yet made its appearance. '' OM nama shivaya"

Lord Vishnu once performed penance towards Lord Shiva in order to be blessed with offspring. Pleased with this penance, Lord Shiva appeared before Lord Vishnu along with Umadevi and Skand in between them denoting the blessing of progeny. Lord Vishnu was enthralled by this vision and desired to haave it before him always. So he summoned Visvakarma the celestial architect to create a figurine of Shiva Somaskanda (sa-uma-skanda: iti somaskanda). the resultant statue was so beautiful. lord vishnu alwys kept in his heart and offered pujas to it. now visvakarma used no sculpting tool to create this figurine.
One day the devas were troubled by an asura, who threatened indra's position. lord vishnu gave indra this somaskanda statue to indra and advised him to worship it and soon he will be relieved of troubles.and as expected the devas weer restored in devaloka. again as destiny would have it indra was troubled by a terrible asura called 'valaa'. this time indra was powerless. and this asura could be destroyed only by a human. The only one who could do it was muchukunda chakravarti who had a monkey face, but was human by birth. the history of muchukunda is that he was a monkey in his previous birth and without his knowledge playfully he had worshipped a siva linga with bilva leaves on a mahashivarathri night. he was blessed by lord shiva and mother parvati with the position of a monarch in his next birth. Muchukunda requested that he be born with a monkey face so that he will not get lost in worldly pleasures and he may remember lord shiva and his grace on him, and so that he may continue his shiva bhakti.
Now muchukunda helped indra regain his indraloka, and indra asked him what he wanted in return. muchukunda requested for the somaskanda idol as there was nothing like i t on earth and becuse of his shiva bhakti. indra was reluctant to part with the lord and he told that he would give it once he got permission from lord vishnu. lord vishnu approved of it.

Indra then summoned visvakarma and asked him to make six more such statues identical to the original. meanwhile, when muchukunda was asleep, lord shiva came in his dreams and warned him about indra's plans. he said that indra would show him seven idols. however, the one on which the bee sits is the one which lord vishnu worshipped. he should take that one.
When muchukunda came, indra showed him all the seven idols and asked the king to choose one. now, as the lord had told him, a bee swarmed around one idol and sat on it. immediately muchukunda picked that indra was in a fix. realizing his folly, he offered all the seven idols to the king heartily There are seven such temples in South India in Tamil Nadu. They are called 'the saptha vidanga sthalangal'. In Thiruvaroor, it is called 'veedhi vidangar'. Vidangar has different meanings. among them 'one who has swallowed the halahala poison' is one menaing. the other is the 'great lord copresent with uma and skanda'. more interestingly, another meaning: an idol or statue or figurine that has been made without using a scalpel or sculpting tool. Somaskandar

mahA vishNu worshipped this mrti for long time having at his heart. Later brahmA requested mahAviShNu for this mUrti and got the same. He worshipped the mUrti and then indra got the same as boon.
